  • Newsletter - w/c 28/06/21

    Thu 24 Jun 2021

    Dear Parent/Carer,

Please see below for some important notices about school life:

    Sibling Photographs - Monday 28 June 2021

If you have made an appointment for a sibling photograph, and if you plan to bring a baby, toddler or nursery-aged child to be in the photograph, please make sure you arrive on time via the School Office, and please keep in mind that you will be required to wear a face covering unless you are medically exempt.

Remember, if your children are in school, and you do not plan to bring a baby, toddler or nursery-aged child to be in the photograph, you do not need to come to school as we will collect the children from class for their photograph.

If you have any questions or queries about this, please telephone or e-mail the School Office to speak to one of the Office Administrators: Mrs Chamberlain or Mrs Pace.

    Annual Reports

You will receive your child's annual report in the week commencing Monday 12 July 2021 - this will include information about their attainment, progress and effort in all subjects, as well as information relating to attendance and the name of your child's class teacher for next year.  You will have the option of meeting your child's current class teacher before or after school if you have any questions about your child's annual report and the instructions for making this appointment are included in the report.

    Punctuality

This is a polite reminder that children need to be in their classroom by 8:55am.

We have had quite a few children arriving late after 8:55am and entering via the School Office.  Remember, arriving late affects attendance and makes children feel uncomfortable as they don't like to be late to class.

In a few weeks, we will do our annual prize draw for those children who have maintained 100% attendance.  The winning child will receive a brand-new tablet and some brand-new reading books and we will announce the winner on Facebook.

    Sports Day

Sports Day for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 is on Wednesday 30 June 2021 and for children in Years 3-6, Sports Day is on Thursday 1 July 2021.

The children must come to school wearing their PE kit, including a t-shirt the colour of their House Team - the teachers have published a post on Facebook to remind parents/carers of which House Team their child is in, but please speak to your child's teacher if you are unsure.  The children must also bring a water bottle and we strongly suggest all children put on factor 30 sunscreen before coming to school to avoid sunburn.

We know parents/carers are disappointed that they won't be able to attend our Sports Day.  We were very much looking forward to restrictions being lifted, so we share your disappointment.  Although schools are allowed to have parents/carers attend in groups of 30, we do not have the resources to keep parents/carers fenced into groups of 30, and because of how we organise our Sports Day with a carousel of activities, it would become difficult for the one parent/carer attending for the child to see them clearly.  Also, we didn't want to create family disagreements where potentially both parents wish to attend, but only one parent is permitted to spectate.  Ultimately, we want the day to be a fun experience for the children, and so we will be sure to organise it safely and effectively so that all the children enjoy themselves, and those children with sporting prowess are able to demonstrate their talents.  Teachers will post many photographs and videos on their class Facebook page so we suggest you check in with Facebook regularly, writing supportive comments which the teachers may then show to the children.  Of course, if your child is on the 'No to Photos' list, we will not publish photographs/videos with them visible.

    Relationships and Sex Education

If you have not done so already, please click here to watch a webinar about our relationships and sex education.  The children will be taught these lessons by their class teacher in July.  As a reminder, this is now a statutory subject and so it is compulsory for all children.  The only exception is in Year 6 where we have made the decision to teach the children about sex.  We do this both to complement the statutory learning in Year 6 science about how living things produce offspring that are not identical to their parents, and because many of our Year 6 children have smartphones and tell us they view unsuitable material, so we want them to have a correct understanding to keep them safe.  If you have a child in Year 6, and you wish to withdraw them from the lessons about sex, you must e-mail or write a letter to the Headteacher to make your request known.  Equally, if you have any questions or concerns about this learning, please feel free to speak to a member of staff you trust (e.g. your child's teacher).

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Yours sincerely,

    Dear Parent/Carer,

Please see below for some important notices about school life:

    Mental Health Support Team

Our School has accessed support for children from the Mental Health Support Team who work for the NHS.  They have requested we include the following notice for parents/carers:

The Mental Health Support Team will be holding a number of workshops over the summer which will be bookable via Eventbrite. These workshops are for parents and carers.

The Mental Health Support Team are also offering a call back service whereby parents or young people can email the team and request a call back. Emails should be sent to hpft.mhstbroxbourne@nhs.net. This is for one-off support only; similar to drop in sessions held in school. The call back service will be available Monday-Friday between 9am- 5pm.

    Sibling Photographs - Monday 28 June 2021

Regarding sibling photographs on Monday 28 June 2021, we have had to cancel all booked appointments and set up a new booking due to an issue with our website.  We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.

Please note, you will have received an e-mail invitation for each of your children, but you need only make a booking for one child.

For example, if you have a child in Year 2 and a child in Year 4, you should only make a booking for the Year 4 child.  We will then collect your Year 2 child at that time to join your Year 4 child.  If you bring a baby, toddler or nursery-aged child to the School Office, you will meet your school-aged children in the Main Hall for the photograph.  To be clear, no parent/carer should be making more than one booking.

Please now look out for an e-mail telling you your booking has been cancelled, and please also look out for an e-mail from notifications@primarysite.net inviting you to make a new booking, being sure to only book for one of your children.

If you have any questions, or need any help, please e-mail or telephone the School Office.

The booking system will close on Thursday 24 June 2021 at 9:00am.

    Sunburn

We had reports this week of some children being absent due to sunburn caused by playing or being outside over the weekend.  Naturally, we want the children to enjoy being outdoors, but we equally want them well enough to be in school.  Therefore, we have the following advice taken from the NHS website for parents/carers regarding protecting children's skin and what to do if they do get sunburn:

To protect your child's skin, apply sunscreen before letting a child out in the sun - Factor 50 will offer the best protection.  We highly recommend all parents/carers do this before sending their child to school.

If a child gets sunburnt, you should:-
    • Get your child out of the sun as soon as possible;
    • Cool their skin with a cool shower, bath or towel, but take care not to let them get too cold as this can cause illness;
    • Apply after sun cream or spray, like aloe vera;
    • Drink plenty of water to cool them down and avoid dehydration;
    • Take painkillers (e.g. Calpol); and,
    • Cover their sunburnt skin when they go outdoors.

Make Music Day - Monday 21 June 2021

To celebrate Make Music Day, we have steelpan and samba drumming workshops for the children to take part in on Monday.  Also, every class will learn a song which they will video and place on Facebook for parents/carers to watch and enjoy.

Year 6 Mock SATs Week - Optional Breakfast Club

On Monday to Thursday next week, we would like to invite all year six pupils to have the opportunity to come in and join us for breakfast club, just like we would have done usually during SATs week in May.  It will start at 8:00am and children must enter through the School Office.  We will have a range of cereals and other goodies on offer, including juices and water.

We are trying our best to ensure the children get the same experiences past Year 6 children would have received.

If your child does not wish to attend - which is absolutely no problem - they will need to ensure they are in school as normal and waiting to enter the classroom between 8:40am and 8:55am, ready to start the day.

    Sports Day 2021

Sadly, we won't be able to host parents/carers at Sports Day this year.  We were hoping for all rules relating to COVID-19 to be relaxed on 21 June, but unfortunately that has been delayed.  We know parents/carers will be disappointed.  Our plan is to post on Facebook as many photographs and videos as possible, being careful not to include any of our children who are on the 'No to Photos' list.  Please make sure you are friends with your child's class Facebook page.

For your information, Reception and Key Stage 1 will have their Sports Day on Wednesday 30 June 2021 and Key Stage 2 will have theirs on Thursday 1 July 2021.  You should send your child to school wearing their PE kit with a t-shirt the same colour as their house team.  If you do not know their house team, speak to your child's class teacher.  You must also send them to school with their water bottle and please apply sunscreen to their skin.

Year 6 Prom, Year 6 Production, Year 6 Graduation and the FoHD Summer Fair

Similar to Sports Day, the delay in lifting restrictions may make it difficult for us to plan these events.

For the Year 6 prom, the current guidelines mean we cannot host the children and adult helpers indoors, and, if we were to host outside, we would have to host three different events to ensure there were no more than 30 individuals.  As such, the Year 6 prom is cancelled.  If you have purchased a ticket for the prom, Miss Read (Finance Administrator) will organise a refund for you.

For the Year 6 production, we will film this and host it on-line for parents/carers to watch.  For the Year 6 graduation, we will take photographs and post them via our class Facebook pages.

For the Friends of Hurst Drive's Summer Fair, this will be cancelled indefinitely, as it will prove too difficult to reorganise at short notice.  We thank those parents/carers who have already given up their time to start preparations.

Of course, if the restrictions are lifted early, we will work fast to reorganise the prom and to organise for parents/carers to come on site to watch the production and observe a graduation assembly.

Please note, we are just as frustrated as you.

As we have done with the A-Life Workshops, Brainblaster Workshops, Steelpan and Samba Drumming Workshops, and the painting of a mural, we will continue to organise ways for the children to have fun, memorable learning experiences in school to make up for the experiences they are missing.

    Fussy Eaters

A local provider, BeeZee Bodies Nutritionists, is organising a workshop for parents/carers to teach them how to manage with a child who is a fussy eater.  You may click here to find out more information and book yourself a place on the workshop.

    Dear Parent/Carer,

Please find below some important notices about school life:

Friends of Hurst Drive - Fathers' Day Sale - Friday 18 June 2021

On Friday 18 June 2021, during the school day, the Friends of Hurst Drive are putting on a sale to allow children to buy gifts for the important men in their lives.  Gifts start at £1 and we recommend you give your child £5 or £10 to spend.

The money raised will go towards further improving our school - for example, the Friends of Hurst Drive have helped to finance the repairs to our adventure playground at the front of the school so you will soon see repaired equipment and new flooring to make it a fun, safe space for the children.  We thank you in advance for your support.

    Sibling Photographs - Monday 28 June 2021

We have arranged for the photographer from Kittle Photography to return to school on Monday 28 June 2021 to take sibling photographs.

Parents/carers will have received an e-mail from notifications@primarysite.net, inviting them to book a timeslot for their children to have their photograph taken.  If you cannot find the e-mail, please contact the School Office and they will send it to you again.

If you wish to bring a baby, toddler or nursery-aged child to be in the photograph, you must arrive at the School Office at your designated time and take them to the Main Hall where their school-aged siblings will be waiting.

Of course, if your children are all in school, you do not need to come to school for them to have their sibling photograph, but you do still need to book a timeslot.

To be clear, we will only be taking the photographs of siblings whose parent/carer has booked a timeslot.

The booking system will close on Saturday 26 June 2021 at 9:00am.

Learning Support Assistant - September 2021

We are looking to appoint a friendly, hardworking learning support assistant from September 2021.  If you, or someone you know, may be interested in applying, please click here.  The deadline to apply is Friday 2 July 2021.

    Breakfast Club

Please note, if you require a Breakfast Club session from Monday 28 June onward you must pay the increased charge of £2 per child per day, and you must book the sessions again via the SchoolGateway app as all old bookings under the previous charge have been cancelled.

If you had already booked and paid for sessions for 28/06/21 onward, the Finance Administrator, Mrs Read, has credited your account on SchoolGateway, but you do still need to make the booking.

As a reminder, drop off to Breakfast Club is between 7:45-8:20am, and if you want your child to be given a breakfast, you must drop them off by 8:15am because the staff take all the children outdoors to play shortly after that time.

Year 6 School Trips & Year 6 Prom

Year 6 have the following upcoming school trips:

14/06/21 - Elm Class - Herts Young Mariners Base in Cheshunt

16/06/21 - Apple Class - Herts Young Mariners Base in Cheshunt

22/06/21 - Apple Class & Elm Class - Go Ape in Alexandra Palace

For these trips, please ensure your child brings a water bottle, a healthy packed lunch, a towel (for Herts Young Mariners Base), and sunscreen.  The children must also wear non-school uniform, preferably sportswear, for each of these trips.

Regarding the prom, we haven't been informed that a group of parents/carers wish to organise the prom independently and off site, so we will go ahead with making arrangements to hold the prom at school on Friday 9 July 2021, 6:00-8:30pm.  We will send out a letter to Year 6 parents/carers with information and how to book and pay for a ticket soon.

    Water Bottles and Sunscreen

This is a reminder to all parents/carers that every child requires a water bottle in school that is labelled with their name.  We also recommend you put sunscreen on your child before they come to school to protect their skin when they're playing or doing sports outdoors.
